    Section 1332 Waiver Tribal Consultation Webinar- August 8, 2016

    As part of the Section 1332 public notice and comment process, states with one or more Federally-recognized tribes within its borders must conduct a separate process for meaningful consultation with tribes.

    SB10 Health care coverage: immigration status was signed by the Governor on June 10, 2016. SB 10 requires that Covered California apply for a Section 1332 Innovation Waiver in order to allow undocumented immigrants to purchase a plan through Covered California. This webinar provided an overview and discussion of the Section 1332 Innovation Waiver.

    Benefits for American Indians and Alaskan Natives

     

    The Affordable Care Act provides affordable health care for all Americans, including American Indians and Alaska Natives who are members of federally recognized Tribes.  California’s Health Benefit Exchange (Covered California) is working in conjunction with Tribal leaders and health experts across the state to ensure American Indians and Alaska Natives are successfully enrolled into Covered California plans.
    As described below, the Affordable Care Act provides unique benefits to American Indians and Alaska Natives who are members of federally recognized Tribes who enroll in a Covered California plan.

    No health care expenses, depending on income
    Federally recognized American Indians and Alaska Natives who earn less than 300% of the federal poverty level (approximately $70,650 in 20114) for a family of four will not have to pay certain out-of-pocket medical costs, such as copays and deductibles, if they purchase a Covered California plan.

    No cost sharing for covered services provided by an Indian health provider or clinic, regardless of income.
    There are no copays or deductibles for any covered services received directly through the federal Indian Health Service, Tribes, Tribal organizations, or urban Indian organizations.

    Ability to buy insurance anytime
    American Indians and Alaska Natives can buy or change health insurance plans once a month through Covered California and are not subject to open enrollment periods.

    Exemption from the shared responsibility payment
    Any member of a federally recognized tribe OR American Indian or Alaska Native who is eligible for services through an Indian Health Services provider is eligible from an exemption from the shared responsibility payment.  Click here for exemption information.
